Our plant observations are based on decades of experience in the nursery and our Holbrook Garden. We only sell plants in which we have complete confidence about their abilities to perform in western UK. Characteristics may be a little different for you but we have to assume you are able to give some basic plant care especially when they are young and establishing. We will send some guidance with the plants about care and management but there is no substitute for a practical plant growing knowledge. If you do not have this then it may be better not to order plants in this way or at the very least seek out someone who can help you. Gardening is a skilled occupation.
Plants by mail order are generally sold in either 9cm pots or 2 litre ones - the size of larger plants should be shown when you order. We have been peat free since 1995. We have been propagating, growing and selling plants from our Sampford Shrubs nursery and Holbrook garden in Devon for more than 35 years, same owners, same place, same quality. We grow plants hard - not fast and soft, and of cultivars which we know grow well in western Britain. Many of these plants have been around for a long time - perhaps species or old cultivars but many are also recent introductions IF we think they are good enough - though many new plants are not sufficiently robust. How many Echinacea have been introduced in the last 15 years and how many last more than 18 months in the garden?
For autumn despatched plants some will be best overwintered in the pots they are sent in and are best some planted out - the cultural advice will be included with the plants. If you do not have such facilities please ask that we send the plants towards the end of the mail order period and you will be able to tell us if you do not have a greenhouse etc when you place your order. Once the plants have left the nursery we clearly have no control over pests, diseases, slugs, dogs, wildlife, builders, strimmers and weedkillers and their treatment so if you should have any problem with growing the plants then we have to have a cutoff date for refunds and replacements of 30 April after the close of the mail order season - giving plants plenty of time to get into growth and show and symptoms.
In the unlikely event that you are dissatisfied with any plants we ask you to take good care of the plant in the interim and return them within one week of delivery and at your expense by first class recorded delivery when we will refund your purchase value. If you receive a plant that is in bad condition when it arrives and when you take it out of the box, contact us immediately and send us a photograph.
But most of all we hope you get lots of pleasure and a sense of fulfilment from growing the plants
